My husband, Jordan, is a high school pastor. So, basically this means he has a really crazy schedule that involves working a lot of nights and weekends. Because of this, his vacation time is the best time in the world. Getting to spend quality time as a family is so important to me, so I cherished and savored every moment that we had him to ourselves while he was on vacation after Christmas.
We decided that we wanted to do some traveling while he was off. We both have wanderlust pretty bad and we are always dreaming of the places we would love to see together. But, being a ministry family living in such a crazy expensive place means we are broke as heck, so visiting far off lands is just a far off dream for now.
We are super blessed that we had friends to stay with out in Palm Desert to make our Salvation Mountain trip possible. We spent 3 vacation days in the desert, and 2 in Big Bear thanks to other friends who let us sleep at their house. We packed most of our food, and used our Christmas money for gas and eating out a little. All in all it was a great time catching up with friends and getting to see some new places on a tiny budget.
We actually lived in the desert for half of my pregnancy and for the first five months of Harper’s life. Jordan got his start in ministry out there after leaving the business world, but 11 months into our desert life, God made it super clear to us that we were to go back to Orange County to start a high school ministry at the church we had been attending before Jordan went into ministry.
Jordan’s family is in OC and right after we moved to the desert, his mom was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. We were making the drive back and forth constantly, and it was starting to get extra stressful, especially with a newborn. It was sad to leave our new community of friends and excellent babysitters, but it was definitely the right move.
So, to pull away from that tangent… back to Salvation Mountain… When we lived in the desert, we wanted to make a trip to see Salvation Mountain and Slab City so badly, but due to me being on bed rest for most of my pregnancy because of having Hyperemesis Gravidarum, we didn’t get to do much at all.
Harper is finally old enough and mobile enough to enjoy Salvation Mountain, and the desert temperatures were actually bearable enough for us to stand, so we finally made the trip happen, and it was completely wonderful.
Here are the photos that I took on my new camera. It’s a Canon Rebel T5i. This was my first time using it. I am still trying to figure out all the details of shooting on manual. Most of these photos have not been edited, because to be honest, I don’t really know how to do that yet. Enjoy!
